Charlestown Gallery: International Contemporary Art in Nevis

Operating since 2013, the Gallery is a registered non-profit dedicated to giving international artists a place to be seen.

The story we tell here didn’t start in 2013. It’s a story of our community, the collective memory and experiences from across the Atlantic through to a time of tiny wooden houses to now. Charlestown Gallery exists to give our collective stories a wall. Some stories are personal, a moment of intimacy between two generations, a unique observation and interpretation of sunbeams. Some are historic, with pieces that feature the Sankofa bird, an Akan symbol for reaching back to move forward, and Ikenga, the Igbo symbol of personal strength and achievement. It’s for these stories that the gallery exists, so that our artists, drawn to the instinct to look back and create, can do so knowing that they will be seen.

Every piece on these walls comes from an artist building their practice and finding their audience, many rooted here in St. Kitts & Nevis, others visiting from elsewhere around the world. Buying, visiting, or just asking questions is part of how that happens.
